Squeezy Dumpling toy withdrawn after benzene contamination
The stress‑relief toy known as Squeezy Dumpling (also marketed as Dumpling Squishy) was found to contain benzene at 20 mg/kg in its outer coating, far above the legal limit of 5 mg/kg. Benzene is classified as a carcinogenic substance and can irritate eyes, nose, throat and cause skin burns through inhalation or skin contact.
Safety authorities in the United Kingdom issued a recall (Recall 2606‑0196) and the European Safety Gate posted alert SR/02073/26. Following these alerts, Argentina’s Subsecretaría de Defensa del Consumidor and Lealtad Comercial launched a market‑withdrawal procedure, ordering the removal of the product from stores nationwide and notifying provincial consumer‑protection agencies. The toy also fails to display the mandatory Conformidad Mark, does not identify its importer, and lacks safety warnings in Spanish. Similar concerns were raised in Chile and New Zealand, where consumer groups highlighted the ability to purchase the banned toy online, underscoring gaps in product‑safety oversight.
