Argentina launches $5.3 bn Luján River flood‑control project

The Buenos Aires Province Ministry of Infrastructure and the Luján River Basin Committee have opened a public consultation for a flood‑control scheme in the Parque Independencia area of Mercedes. The project, called “Paseo y Control de Inundaciones,” is funded with 5.334 billion Argentine pesos from the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) and aims to build advanced hydraulic works and a modern urban drainage system to protect the riverbank and nearby neighborhoods from overflow during heavy rains.

The consultation will be held on 4 August 2026 at the local community centre, where officials will present technical and environmental reports and answer residents’ questions. The initiative seeks to address long‑standing flooding problems along the Luján River and improve safety for roads, homes and recreational spaces in the region.
