Argentina launches electronic DNI with embedded chip

Since February, Argentina has begun issuing a new electronic National Identity Document (DNI) that incorporates a contactless chip and QR code in a polycarbonate card. The chip stores encrypted biometric and personal data, allowing rapid electronic verification at airports, borders and other official checkpoints and supporting future digital‑identity services such as online identity confirmation. The new DNI also features enhanced physical security elements, including high‑resolution printing, holograms, UV inks and forensic‑grade markers. Existing paper‑based DNIs remain valid until their expiration dates.

The rollout is part of a broader effort by the National Registry of Persons (Renaper) to modernize personal documentation, reduce fraud risk and streamline interactions with public and private services.
