Argentina Launches First Solar‑Powered Train in Jujuy Province

Argentina has inaugurated its first solar‑powered train in the northern province of Jujuy. Operating on a restored 19th‑century railway, the 42‑kilometre service runs through the UNESCO‑listed Quebrada de Humahuaca, linking the towns of Volcán, Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Maimará, Tilcara and a stop at Hornillos. The train travels at about 33 km/h and is marketed as “slow travel,” allowing passengers to view colourful mountain scenery through large panoramic windows while listening to traditional pan‑flute music.

The route is designed as a cultural tourism experience that highlights more than 10,000 years of Indigenous heritage. Guided stops include archaeological sites, workshops with local Indigenous artisans, storytelling sessions with elders and exhibitions of traditional crafts and cuisine. The project aims to promote sustainable tourism, renewable energy and the preservation of the region’s ancient cultural landscape.
