Argentina solar-powered tourist train
Entities: Quebrada de Humahuaca · Tren Solar de la Quebrada · UNESCO World Heritage · Jujuy Province
Overview
In mid‑July 2026 Argentina announced the launch of the country’s first solar‑powered train in Jujuy Province. By the end of the month the Tren Solar de la Quebrada was in operation, running through the UNESCO World Heritage Quebrada de Humahuaca. The service connects five small towns—Volcán, Tumbaya, Purmamarca, Maimará and Tilcara—using lithium‑ion batteries that are recharged at stations equipped with solar panels. The electric train replaces diesel locomotives, cutting emissions, noise and fuel costs while promoting sustainable tourism in the region’s iconic multicoloured hills and historic streets.
