Argentina leads Latin America in banking delinquency rate
Argentina has recorded the highest banking delinquency rate in Latin America, according to a report by the Latin American Federation of Banks (Felaban). For the first quarter of 2026, the country's private sector loan delinquency reached 7.3%, significantly exceeding the regional average of 2.78%. Additionally, Argentina maintains the lowest credit-to-GDP ratio in the region at 14.3%, compared to a regional average of 47.3%.
Household debt is reaching critical levels, with approximately 5.8 to 7 million Argentines facing difficulties repaying obligations. Data from the consultancy Equilibra indicates that 16.3% of personal credit debt is at least three months overdue. This surge in arrears is occurring alongside economic adjustments under President Javier Milei, where high real interest rates and stagnant wages have pressured family budgets.
The government has maintained that the increase in delinquency is a matter between private parties and has declined to implement public relief measures. While inflation has decelerated from its 289% peak in early 2024 to approximately 34%, the cost of essential services and the high cost of credit continue to drive financial distress among households.
