Argentina diesel prices become highest in the region

Argentina has become the regional leader in diesel prices, reaching US$1.63 per liter in October. This represents a 35.83% increase in dollar terms since January, surpassing neighboring countries such as Uruguay (US$1.56) and Paraguay (US$1.54).

The price surge follows international volatility, specifically the Brent crude oil barrel rising above US$100 due to conflicts in the Middle East. In response to these fluctuations, the state-linked energy company YPF has implemented a price buffer mechanism to mitigate the immediate impact of international volatility on local consumers.

YPF CEO Horacio Marín stated that the company will not implement immediate price reductions even if international crude prices fall, as the strategy aims to recover costs absorbed during periods of high volatility. Additionally, YPF is projecting significant long-term energy infrastructure developments, including the Vaca Muerta Oil Sur (VMOS) pipeline and the Argentina LNG project, with the goal of reaching annual energy exports between US$55 billion and US$58 billion by 2031.
