Global fuel price surges and energy inflation
Overview
Rising fuel costs continue to drive significant inflation and transportation expenses globally. In Spain, diesel prices have surged by over 15%, outpacing gasoline due to high freight demand and geopolitical tensions. In Argentina, super gasoline prices have increased by 558% over two and a half years, resulting in a 38% loss in fuel purchasing power despite record domestic production from Vaca Muerta.
In Argentina, the economic impact is manifesting in a sustained downturn in consumption. July 2026 marked the sixth consecutive monthly decline in fuel sales, with national volume dropping 6.4% year-on-year to 1,368,722 cubic meters. This contraction was widespread across 21 provinces. Tucumán saw the sharpest decline at 22.41%, followed by Jujuy (16.42%) and Salta (15.9%). In the Northeast, Misiones and Corrientes saw drops of 8.9% and 9.8% respectively, while Chaco recorded a 7.8% increase in diesel sales. In Entre Ríos, gasoline demand fell by 7.9%, though premium diesel saw a 1% increase. Local workers in Salta reported that rising costs are placing a heavy burden on those relying on vehicles for their livelihoods.
In Bolivia, YPFB President Sebastián Daroca warned that fuel subsidies have become unsustainable due to the gap between international import costs and frozen domestic prices, with estimated deficits of 1,700 million bolivianos for diesel and gasoline. Furthermore, Minister of Hydrocarbons Marcelo Blanco alleged an internal “mafia” within YPFB and the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) is involved in smuggling. Although the Assembly addressed these allegations, it did not reach the two-thirds majority required to censure Blanco.
