Argentina household debt crisis triggers political and religious debate

Argentina is facing a significant rise in household debt and delinquency. Bank delinquency for families reached 12.8% in June, while delinquency in digital wallets surged to 30.1%. Private sector delinquency also rose to 7.73% in July, with households refinancing a record $2.6 trillion in debt.

In response to the crisis, the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA) has urged the government to avoid a “superficial” approach and implement regulations to prevent families from becoming trapped in unsustainable debt. The Church compared the situation to online gambling addiction, noting that many use digital wallets to cover basic needs.

President Javier Milei has dismissed the need for state intervention, characterizing the issue as a private matter between individuals. However, the opposition has called for a special session in the Chamber of Deputies on September 9 to discuss legislative proposals, including debt relief programs and interest rate limits. Meanwhile, the banking association Abappra has requested the Central Bank to allow more flexible debt refinancing and accounting treatments to assist debtors.
