Argentina lifts banana import ban in Salta and Jujuy, deregulates eight phytosanitary rules

The Argentine government, through the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, issued Resolution 114/2026, published in the Official Gazette on Monday. The resolution eliminates a series of phytosanitary measures dating from 1994 and a 2013 amendment that had prohibited the entry of bananas from countries where certain pests were detected into the north‑western provinces of Salta and Jujuy. At the same time, eight additional phytosanitary norms covering imports such as agricultural machinery, seed potatoes and other products were repealed, with the aim of replacing outdated rules with modern risk‑analysis, certification, traceability and international standards.

The changes are expected to broaden the pool of eligible suppliers for the region, potentially increasing competition among distributors and influencing wholesale and retail banana prices. However, sanitary controls will remain in place, and price effects will depend on the new procedures, transport costs and market conditions. The measure does not affect previously acquired rights or past administrative acts.
