Argentina marks 50 years since San Patricio church massacre

On July 4, 2024, Argentina commemorated the 50th anniversary of the San Patricio massacre, when three Pallottine priests and two seminarians were shot dead in the parish of Villa Urquiza during the military dictatorship of 1976‑1983. A Mass was celebrated at the historic church by Archbishop Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva, and a cultural‑historical exhibition titled “Juntos vivieron, juntos murieron” was opened in the city’s Hall of Honor.

The ceremony also honored the Palotinos por la Memoria collective, which received a diploma recognizing its human‑rights work. Organizers called for renewed justice for the victims, whose murders were attributed to a task‑force of the ESMA and have never been fully investigated. Judge Daniel Rafecas recently ordered police interrogation of suspects linked to the case. The church, built in 1928 by the Irish Catholic community, was declared a cultural‑heritage site in 2024, and discussions continue about the possible canonisation of the slain clergy.
