Argentina historical memory commemorations 2026
Overview
In May–June 2026, Argentina staged a series of cultural, political, and religious commemorations of its traumatic past. A theatre piece “Hacer (de) Memoria” in Córdoba linked bodily expression with the ideas of Roberto Cantos, while a human-rights congress at the Universidad Nacional de Santiago del Estero examined historical memory through various social lenses. The 71st anniversary of the 1955 Plaza de Mayo bombing was marked on 16 June, and the 50th anniversary of the San Patricio church massacre was observed on 4 July, featuring a Mass by Archbishop Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva and calls for the canonisation of the slain clergy.
In August, commemorations focused on the 50th anniversary of the 1976 martyrdom of Bishop Enrique Angelelli and companions Carlos de Dios Murias, Gabriel Longueville, and Wenceslao Pedernera. Central ceremonies were held at the Ermita “El Pastor” and the newly inaugurated Parque Temático Turístico Memoria y Martirio in Punta de los Llanos. These events, organized by Governor Ricardo Quintela, drew national Peronist leaders, including Deputy Máximo Kirchner and Deputy Victoria Tolosa Paz, who linked the martyrs’ legacy to current political discourse and the pursuit of unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
In mid-August, the nation marked the 50th anniversary of the March 24, 1976, military coup. In Quilmes, the Club Mitre hosted book presentations to preserve historical memory against “rising denialism regarding the genocide.” These included ‘Solo para decirlo’, a collection of literary testimonies, and ‘Raspar el silencio. Los desaparecidos del Poli’ by Horacio Fernández, which documents the abduction of students and a teacher from the Politécnico de Berazategui between 1977 and 1978.
