Overview

During May‑June 2026 Argentina mounted a series of cultural, political and religious events that revisited the nation’s traumatic past. A theatre piece “Hacer (de) Memoria” in Córdoba and a human‑rights congress in Santiago del Estero opened the month, followed by the 71st anniversary of the 1955 Plaza de Mayo bombing and a Mass and exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the 1974 San Patricio church massacre. On 1 July, the Justicialist Party coordinated ceremonies in Tres Arroyos, Formosa, Berazategui and Olavarría to mark the 52nd anniversary of former President Juan Domingo Perón’s death. Local Peronist leaders highlighted the continuity of Perón’s doctrine, warned of recent toll concessions, and reiterated how his 1974 passing set the stage for the instability that culminated in the 1976 coup. Four days later, Archbishop Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva presided over a Mass at Buenos Aires’ San Patricio church, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 killing of the Pallottine martyrs. His homily linked the victims’ defence of life with current social suffering, calling for renewed aid to the poor and accountability for unresolved crimes. In August, the Diocese of La Rioja organized a four‑day programme to mark the 50th anniversary of Bishop Enrique Angelelli’s 1976 martyrdom, including a Mass, pilgrimage, commemorative ceremony on Route 38, cultural performances, a diocesan march and the opening of a museum beside the La Rioja Cathedral. On 25 July 2026 artistic programmes in Rosario and Cipolletti added another layer to the remembrance, with folk and feminist music, poetry, audiovisual projections and a photography exhibition on desaparecidos.
