Argentina marks 50th anniversary of Bishop Enrique Angelelli's murder

A mass ceremony in La Rioja commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1976 killing of Bishop Enrique Angelelli, a prominent figure of the Argentine Church who defended the poor. The event, held at Punta de los Llanos and the Ermita El Pastor, was attended by national Peronist leaders including Deputy Victoria Tolosa Paz, Senator Máximo Kirchner, Governor Ricardo Quintela and other legislators, who linked Angelelli’s legacy to current political discourse.

The commemoration also highlighted the bishop’s posthumous beatification by the Catholic Church and recalled the original cover‑up by the military dictatorship, which had claimed the death was a traffic accident. Historical references were made to former dictator Jorge Rafael Videla’s testimony about the case, underscoring the long‑standing struggle for truth and justice in Argentina’s human‑rights history.
