Argentina marks World Environment Day with glacier law reforms in Catamarca and sustainability events in Zárate

Biologist and environmental impact specialist Carlos Barrionuevo said the recent amendments to Argentina’s Glacier Law give provinces, such as Catamarca, the authority to create their own glacier inventories and define protected areas. He highlighted that the reform provides certainty for land‑use decisions, helps map previously undocumented glacial systems and supports balanced development of water resources. Barrionuevo voiced the changes during World Environment Day activities organized by the provincial environment secretariat, which included educational stalls, recycling actions and the distribution of native plant seedlings.

In the city of Zárate, the municipal Subsecretariat of Environment and Sustainable Development coordinated a public outreach day at Plaza Mitre. Local organisations, businesses and schools presented recycling programs and biodiversity information. The event featured the planting of 40 native trees at a key intersection, a joint effort by the municipality, Toyota and primary‑school students, aimed at expanding the city’s biological corridor.
