Marine turtle conservation and nesting intensifies in Mexico

Overview

Marine turtle nesting and conservation efforts continue across Mexico. In Michoacán, massive arrivals of olive ridley turtles for spawning have been reported at Ixtapilla, while leatherback and black turtles nest in sanctuaries such as Mexiquillo and Colola.

In Baja California Sur, authorities in Los Cabos have launched operations to protect approximately 10,000 olive ridley eggs at Playa El Médano. Nesting activity has recently intensified in Los Cabos, with up to 350 specimens recorded in a single night. To manage this, the XV Ayuntamiento has reinforced surveillance patrols and nest monitoring in coordination with public security and environmental agencies. Officials have advised the public not to touch turtles or use camera flashes, noting they are protected under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. In La Paz, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has increased surveillance to safeguard nests from pollution and illegal extraction.

Conservation activities in Veracruz remain active, with hatchling releases in Papantla and Nautla. In Oaxaca, nesting remains significant at Playa Escobilla and Morro Ayuta Beach Sanctuary.

In Cancún, the 2026 nesting season has seen significant activity, with the General Directorate of Ecology of Benito Juárez recording 10,407 protected nests, yielding over 1.2 million eggs and approximately 203,994 hatchlings. However, authorities are investigating reports of dead hatchlings near the Hotel Live Aqua following social media concerns. The Directorate clarified that some nests are laid ‘in situ’—naturally outside of designated protection areas—where hatchlings may be exposed to predators as part of the natural cycle. They are coordinating with Profepa to determine if there is any responsibility regarding the management of protection corrals.
