Mexico sea‑turtle protection expands, releases, local patrol
Entities: Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) · Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) · Landy Guadalupe Canché Pantoja · Michoacán (Mexico) · Playa La Pesca
Overview
Building on earlier federal monitoring and community patrols, municipal authorities in Puerto Morelos and Benito Juárez reported continued night‑time beach patrols in late July 2026. Puerto Morelos recorded 860 active nests, while Benito Juárez protected 5,213 nests and more than 607,000 eggs within 48 corrals along a 12‑km shoreline, highlighting ongoing citizen involvement and coordination with specialists.
In the Gulf region, Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya chaired the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2026 sea‑turtle release season at La Pesca beach camp. Officials released a total of 231,115 hatchlings across six camps—predominantly loggerheads (230,773) and a smaller number of green turtles (342). The final ceremony on 26 July saw 342 hatchlings (57 loggerheads, 285 greens) released, reaffirming the state’s commitment to Gulf biodiversity.
These actions extend the multi‑level conservation framework, linking federal monitoring, grassroots patrols, and large‑scale hatchling releases to safeguard Mexico’s marine turtles and related wildlife.
