Argentina: President Milei faces backlash over economic comments

President Javier Milei has faced significant criticism following remarks in which he dismissed claims that many Argentines struggle to afford basic necessities by the end of the month. Describing the notion as a ‘pelotudez del tamaño de una casa’ (a stupidity the size of a house), Milei suggested that such claims are political slogans rather than reality, questioning how people could survive without food or water if they truly ran out of money by the 20th.

These comments coincided with a rise in Milei’s negative image, which reached 56% according to the Ad Hoc consultancy. Various figures have responded to his stance: Fernando Espinoza, Mayor of La Matanza, accused the President of mocking a reality he does not understand, while Cardinal Ángel Rossi stated, ‘If people say they cannot make it, it is because they cannot.’

Economically, Milei admitted that national indicators are not evolving as positively as initially expected. He attributed the slower-than-anticipated decline in inflation and sluggish economic growth to external shocks, including high interest rates in the United States and global conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Despite these challenges, Milei maintained that while the current ‘photo’ of the economy is difficult, the overall ‘movie’ or long-term trajectory remains the best in history.
