Argentina municipal elections and 2027 campaign drive
Overview
As the 2027 election cycle approaches, Peronist leaders in Argentina are intensifying efforts to organize while navigating internal divisions. Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof continues to expand his political space, the ‘Movimiento Derecho al Futuro’ (MDF), through regional plenaries and preparations for a federal event in Avellaneda. Kicillof’s platform focuses on national sovereignty, industrialization, and science, while offering criticism of the current administration’s economic and foreign policies.
To manage factionalism, the Liga de Intendentes Peronistas is attempting to serve as a political bridge, meeting with both Kicillof and La Cámpora leader Máximo Kirchner to discuss the socio-economic consequences of President Javier Milei’s policies. Efforts to consolidate the movement have also included specialized assemblies, such as the Federal Meeting of Peronist Women in Catamarca.
Kicillof has intensified his opposition to President Milei through strategic regional activities. During a visit to Misiones to meet with Governor Hugo Passalacqua, Kicillof signed cooperation agreements regarding security, biotechnology, and industrial development, including the integration of the National University of Misiones into the ‘Puentes’ program. This trip, which included tours of the Misiones Biofactory and the Las Tunas yerba mate cooperative, served as a political demonstration of strength. During this visit, Kicillof also criticized President Milei’s proposal to eliminate the PASO primary elections, arguing the reform is a strategy to prevent opposition parties from organizing effectively for future elections. In La Plata, Kicillof has also escalated his critique of national economic policies, claiming they have led to significant job losses and company closures since December 2023. Additionally, the provincial government held the 4th Productive Congress in La Plata to address labor reform, industrial policy, and the effects of economic deregulation on SMEs and regional production.
