Argentina's Minister Federico Sturzenegger pushes to drop driving test and attacks Buenos Aires governor

Minister of Deregulation and State Transformation Federico Sturzenegger said the mandatory driving‑test requirement could be eliminated, pointing to Mexico’s experience where removing the exam was linked to a decline in accidents. He framed the proposal as part of President Javier Milei’s broader deregulation agenda, which has already introduced digital driver’s licences and other administrative simplifications.

Sturzenegger also criticised Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof, accusing the province of reversing national deregulation measures. He cited the reinstatement of the vehicle‑registration system (RUTA) and the return of port‑guard requirements, describing them as unnecessary costs. The minister labeled the Peronist party “the party of the caste,” arguing that freed‑from‑state control policies better serve the public.

His remarks highlight growing tensions between the Milei government’s national deregulation drive and provincial authorities that are re‑introducing regulations the centre has abolished.
