Argentina oil infrastructure and investment developments
The Argentine oil industry is seeing significant shifts in both infrastructure and private investment. The VMOS S.A. consortium has completed the 437-kilometer terrestrial section of an oil pipeline connecting Allen, Río Negro, to Punta Colorada. Constructed by the Techint-SACDE joint venture, the pipeline is now entering the commissioning phase to test facility integrity before the first barrel is injected.
This infrastructure is designed to facilitate the evacuation of Neuquén shale oil. Initial capacity is expected to reach 180,000 barrels per day by early 2027, with a long-term goal of moving 550,000 barrels per day by the end of next year. Technical challenges included using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) to tunnel 25 meters beneath the Río Negro to protect the local ecosystem.
In the private sector, Venoil Energía, led by former YPF employee Gustavo Naves, is focusing on mature conventional fields that larger operators are increasingly abandoning. Naves, who rose from a production worker to a manager overseeing 1,800 employees at YPF, is now positioning his company to invest significantly in these existing assets.
