Argentina energy expansion fuels trade surge and jobs
Entities: XRG · Eni · Argentina LNG · YPF · Vaca Muerta
Overview
By late June 2026 Vaca Muerta’s multi‑billion‑dollar expansion raised crude output 20 % month‑on‑month and gas 13.8 %, covering 97 % of domestic oil and 91 % of gas. The Neuquén legislature approved a YPF‑led fiscal regime for the flagship LNG export project, and construction began on a 480‑km, 36‑inch pipeline to San Antonio Oeste, slated for May 2028; the San Matías line is over 60 % complete, and a US$1.2 bn contract awarded 8 July will add a 527‑km, 48‑inch gas line and a 24‑inch multipurpose line for the Sierra Grande LNG terminal later in 2026. The upcoming VMOS pipeline, expected operational by year‑end, will add roughly 190,000 bbl/day to export capacity.
Trade data released in July showed a record‑high first‑half 2026 surplus of US$49.45 bn, driven by a 24.5 % YoY rise in exports to US$9.06 bn, with energy shipments from Vaca Muerta contributing over 42 % of the balance. Agro‑industrial products and a growing beef sector, bolstered by new US‑EU agreements, also lifted export values.
Neuquén’s provincial government rolled out a housing credit scheme enrolling more than 3,000 families and launched a US$500 million Vaca Muerta‑backed bond, earmarking 70 % of proceeds for local roads, transport and social projects. Meanwhile, YPF secured an environmental licence to drill twelve horizontal wells in the Meseta Buena Esperanza I block as a pilot for the Argentina LNG export chain, a US$161 million undertaking led by a consortium with ENI and XRG.
Private‑sector jobs in Neuquén grew 7.1 % (≈12,000 workers) between Nov 2023 and Apr 2026, straining services and prompting stricter residency rules, while the governor announced a tender to irrigate >50,000 ha to diversify the economy.
