Argentina passes law banning foie gras and all forced‑feeding animal products

On 24 July the Argentine Congress approved Law 15.475, which prohibits the production and sale of any food obtained through forced‑feeding techniques, commonly used to produce foie gras. The ban covers both fresh and processed products and will take effect 180 days after publication. Violations may be prosecuted under the Environmental Crime Law, with penalties that include seizure of goods, fines and up to one year of imprisonment. The measure was backed by animal‑protection organizations seeking to end the practice of inserting tubes into the mouths of ducks and geese to force excess feeding.

The law aims to prevent hepatic steatosis caused by over‑feeding, improve animal welfare and align Argentina with other countries that have restricted forced‑feeding methods.
