Argentina political debate intensifies over potential PASO election reforms

Political tensions in Argentina are escalating over a potential government move to eliminate or suspend the Primarias Abiertas, Simultáneas y Obligatorias (PASO) elections. Germán Martínez, head of the Peronist bloc in the Chamber of Deputies, argues that the Milei administration seeks to abolish these primaries to divide the opposition and prevent them from forming a unified front for a potential runoff election.

Martínez suggests that by removing the PASO, the government aims to secure a first-round victory, which would bypass the need for a second round. He criticized the current economic direction, citing the closure of small businesses and declining wages for teachers and scientists.

Meanwhile, political discourse has also touched upon the stability of the administration. Vice President Victoria Villarruel has expressed concern regarding the President's decision-making, while reports have emerged regarding pressure on media outlets and journalists concerning government advertising and editorial independence.
