Argentina provincial election timing talks

Entities: Diego Santilli · Patricia Bullrich · Primarias Abiertas, Simultáneas y Obligatorias (PASO) · Argentine Congress · Javier Milei

Overview

In early July 2026, governors of several Argentine provinces began coordinating their election calendars to hold provincial votes in May 2027, aiming to separate them from the October presidential election and limit the influence of the libertarian coalition La Libertad Avanza. The initiative quickly expanded into a broader negotiation with the national government.

President Javier Milei’s administration intensified talks with governors in ten key provinces, offering public‑works projects, funding and debt‑restructuring in exchange for support to suspend the Primary, Open, Simultaneous and Obligatory (PASO) primaries ahead of the 2027 contests. By 23 July, the list of targeted provinces grew to include Entre Ríos, Mendoza, Chaco, San Luis, Buenos Aires, San Juan, Santa Fe, Neuquén, Chubut, Jujuy, Río Negro and Santa Cruz, underscoring the government's strategy to secure provincial backing for a legislative move to halt the PASO.

On 26 July, the executive admitted it had not yet gathered the required congressional majorities—37 Senate votes and 129 deputies—to abolish PASO permanently. With opposition from factions within the UCR, PRO and other provincial blocs, Milei’s team is now weighing a temporary suspension for the 2027 elections while continuing outreach to governors for political support. The effort unfolds amid external economic pressures such as U.S. tariff threats, the war in Iran, high oil prices and an imminent IMF visit.
