Javier Milei faces backlash as half of Argentines reject adjustment
A national poll by the consultancy QSocial of 1,323 respondents shows that 50 % of Argentines say they can no longer wait for government economic measures to improve their personal situation. Only 20 % would wait until the 2027 presidential election, 10 % until the end of this year and 8 % until mid‑2027. The same survey finds that 16 % rate the current economic situation as good, 35 % as regular and 48 % as bad, while 31 % believe the country is better than in December 2023. Economic pessimism is strong: 47 % expect the economy to be worse in a year and 61 % think the government cannot solve the main problems. Work and poverty are each mentioned by 21 % of respondents as top concerns.
President Javier Milei has repeatedly denied that United States aid “saved” Argentina, stating that the U.S. contribution was less than 5 % of a $70 billion package and calling such claims “intellectually dishonest”. He also defended his economic program, citing measures such as higher bank reserve requirements and a “fiscal clamp” to curb deficits, while asserting that inflation will fall as monetary policy effects materialize.
