Argentina prepares for potential surge in private US dollar demand

The Argentine government is preparing contingency plans to address a potential surge in private demand for US dollars in 2027. While current financial programs account for US$24.9 billion in Treasury maturities, they do not factor in a significant increase in private sector demand for the currency.

Market estimates suggest that potential demand could reach between US$30 billion and US$40 billion next year. This follows trends observed in 2025, where dollar purchases and non-specific transfers reached US$32 billion, the highest level in two decades following the lifting of exchange controls. Data from the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) indicates that net foreign currency purchases by individuals rose from US$2.821 billion in June to US$4.124 billion in July.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo recently met with investors at JP Morgan in New York, expressing confidence in the economy's current state compared to 2023 and asserting the administration's ability to win upcoming elections.
