Argentine economic diplomacy and financing efforts
Overview
Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo has engaged in several high-level diplomatic and financial efforts to support the economic program of President Javier Milei. In late August, Caputo met with Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) officials to discuss multilateral financing, including an approved loan of up to US$ 85 million for Mendoza. Caputo characterized the financing as a “concrete demonstration of confidence in the economic program and the reforms” led by the administration.
During the G20 summit of finance ministers and central bank governors in Asheville, North Carolina, Caputo met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. Their discussion focused on Argentina’s economic agenda and the progress made by the government to consolidate stability and support growth. Georgieva noted the “impressive economic rebound” in Argentina resulting from these policies, attributing it to “good policies and solid implementation.”
Caputo also held bilateral meetings with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to strengthen financial ties. Bessent described Argentina as leading a ‘historic opportunity’ in the Western Hemisphere and expressed support for the government's economic adjustment plan. Following the G20 summit, Caputo described his discussions with Bessent as “great,” noting that both the U.S. Treasury and the IMF have expressed confidence in Argentina's direction.
Following these meetings, Caputo reported high levels of international optimism. He stated that neither the U.S. Treasury nor the IMF expressed concern regarding Argentina's economic trajectory, inflation, or rising credit delinquency. During his participation in the G20, Caputo also held discussions with World Bank President Ajay Banga. While the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) has criticized the economic team's approach to the manufacturing sector, Caputo maintained that the country is undergoing a “necessary economic reconversion” and expressed confidence in meeting targets for the upcoming IMF program review.
