Argentina Senate to vote on land law amendment capping foreign ownership at 25%
The government of President Javier Milei has revised its controversial “Law of Inviolability of Private Property” to raise the ceiling on foreign ownership of rural land from the current 15% to 25% in each province. The amendment also removes municipal and departmental caps, keeps the national 25% limit, bans foreign states from buying any Argentine land and requires joint approval from the national government and the relevant province for purchases by foreign‑linked companies. It eliminates the 1,000‑hectare transfer restriction in the core agricultural zone.
Senator Patricia Bullrich, leader of the La Libertad Avanza bloc, announced the changes and said the Senate will vote on the amendment on Thursday. The proposal faces strong opposition from provincial officials, the Federación Argentina de Municipios, Indigenous groups and other civil‑society organisations, which warn that the reform threatens national sovereignty and strategic resources such as water, lithium and glaciers. Several senators from the Radical and provincial blocs have signaled they may vote against the measure, making the outcome uncertain.
