Argentina reaches energy subsidy deal with Norte Grande governors

The Argentine government has reached an agreement with the governors of the Norte Grande region to implement a new energy subsidy scheme. This political compromise aims to address high electricity consumption in northern provinces during hot months in exchange for reducing winter gas subsidies.

Under the new plan, which will apply between November and April, electricity consumption blocks for subsidized users will be adjusted based on regional temperature classifications. In 'very warm' zones, the subsidized block will increase from 300 to 550 kWh per month. In 'warm' zones, the block will rise from 150 to 300 kWh. The measure is expected to cover between 50% and 80% of electricity costs depending on the specific zone.

The government intends to implement these changes through a resolution, bypassing the need for Congressional approval. This move is part of a broader fiscal strategy to achieve savings of approximately $272,099 million by reforming the 'Cold Zone' gas subsidy laws, though critics note that the new summer electricity subsidies will offset some of these projected savings.
