Argentina road infrastructure faces decline amid historic budget cuts

Argentina's national road infrastructure is facing a period of significant decline due to historic budget reductions. Reports indicate that the budget for national routes has dropped to its lowest level in three decades. Between 2023 and 2025, real investment in road maintenance fell by approximately 60%, with some provinces experiencing even sharper declines, such as Buenos Aires and Chubut, which saw reductions near 85%.

The impact on physical infrastructure is evident, as nearly 58% of surveyed routes are currently classified in ‘bad’ or ‘regular’ condition. Specifically, 31.8% of roads are rated as ‘bad’ and 25.7% as ‘regular’. This represents an acceleration in degradation, as the proportion of roads in good condition has dropped from 55% in previous periods to 42.4%.

Budgetary analysis of the National Directorate of Highways (DNV) and the National Road Safety Agency (ANSV) shows a consolidated spending reduction of 70% between 2023 and 2025. Furthermore, 63% of the 179 originally planned road projects for this year have been left with budgets of nearly zero or no funding at all. The Federation of National Highway Personnel (Fepevina) has characterized the situation as a major dismantling of the sector.
