Argentina seeks AI investment as Milei promotes techno-optimism

Argentine President Javier Milei is positioning himself as a techno-optimist, viewing the acceleration of technology as a moral obligation and a driver for economic progress. Through his ambassador to Washington, Alec Oxenford, Milei has stated that artificial intelligence represents an extraordinary opportunity to boost productivity and help Argentina converge with advanced economies.

Despite this stance, Argentina has yet to attract significant investments in the AI sector. In an effort to engage with the industry, Oxenford is scheduled to meet with Meta in New York next Monday, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.

This domestic push occurs amidst a global debate over AI regulation. While leaders from major firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, and Google DeepMind have called for stricter controls to mitigate existential risks, other political figures, including Donald Trump, have dismissed the need for such restrictions.
