Argentina sees growth in private sector credit amid auto loan concerns

Argentina is experiencing a shift in its economic landscape as private sector credit begins to grow. For decades, the country struggled with a lack of credit due to high inflation, which incentivized citizens to avoid the peso and seek refuge in dollars or physical assets rather than participating in a healthy savings and lending cycle.

In the automotive sector, Banco Nación has introduced new credit programs for both new and used vehicles to stimulate the market. While the government promotes these as tools for financial access with competitive rates, analysts have raised concerns. Critics warn that high interest rates combined with the rapid depreciation of new vehicles could lead to “negative equity,” where the debt owed exceeds the actual value of the car, potentially causing financial distress for families.
