Argentina's CGT plans July protests against Milei government

The Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) reached a joint agreement with the two Central de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de la Argentina (CTA) factions and the Unión de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de la Economía Popular (UTEP) to restart a coordinated protest campaign after the 2026 World Cup. The first rally is scheduled for Wednesday 22 July, marching with retirees in front of the Congress in Buenos Aires, followed by a second mass demonstration on Friday 7 August during the traditional San Cayetano pilgrimage. The unions also plan actions when the next Consejo del Salario Mínimo, Vital y Móvil (SMVM) convenes, and have kept open the option of calling a general strike, though no date has been set. They will take part in the “Semana Social” in Córdoba on 4‑6 September, an event linked to the upcoming papal visit. In parallel, the Milei administration issued decree 612/2026, removing the 2 % cap on extra employer contributions to unions, a concession that the CGR described as a relief for union finances. The coordinated mobilizations aim to pressure the government over pension rights, wages, employment and broader economic policies.
