Argentina Senate rebuffs Formosa intervention request amid judge appointment controversy

The Argentine Senate rejected a federal intervention proposal for the province of Formosa put forward by Senator Francisco Paoltroni. Vice President and Senate President Victoria Villarruel halted the debate, reprimanding Paoltroni for pressing a project lacking sufficient votes. Senator Patricia Bullrich, speaking for the ruling coalition, emphasized respect for Supreme Court rulings and warned that an intervention would be an extreme institutional measure, ultimately refusing to support the request.

In the same session, senators clashed over the government's effort to withdraw the nomination (pliego) of judge Verónica Michelli. The move sparked disagreement within the governing bloc and with opposition parties. Senate President Bartolomé Abdala defended the executive's prerogative, citing precedent of former presidents removing nominations, while the Radical bloc demanded a clear justification. The discussion was deferred to a special meeting on 10 June, highlighting the Senate's internal political and judicial tensions.
