Argentina shifts export duty burden toward agricultural sector
The implementation of Decree 566/2026 in Argentina has reignited debates regarding export duties. The decree immediately reduced the tax burden on more than 1,400 tariff positions, significantly altering the country's tax landscape.
A report by the Interdisciplinary Institute of Political Economy (IIEP) of the UBA and CONICET indicates that while Argentina has approximately 30,000 tariff positions, only slightly more than 1,900 remain subject to export duties. Recent reductions have heavily impacted industrial products and regional economies, shifting the weight of the tax primarily toward the agricultural sector.
Economist Federico Bernini noted that major agricultural complexes, including soy, corn, and wheat, continue to represent a significant portion of the revenue generated by these duties. The government is currently attempting to implement a gradual reduction of the tax burden without compromising fiscal revenue.
