Southern Cone agri‑export growth and Argentine fiscal shifts
Overview
In early July, Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul reported wheat sowing at 87% of the planned 814,000 ha. Despite cool temperatures and localized flooding, planting progressed. In June, the state’s agribusiness exports reached US$1.24 billion, a 3.9% year-on-year increase, even as physical volumes dipped 2.2%. Notable surges included chicken revenues, up 65.6%, and live cattle sales, which jumped 1,567% due to demand from Turkey. By late July, the Southern Cone’s export momentum expanded. Uruguay’s Nueva Palmira terminal handled nearly one million tonnes of cargo in the first half of 2026. Argentina’s agro-industrial exports rose 17.3% YoY to US$26.98 billion, with total shipments reaching a near-record US$27 billion and 52.8 million tonnes—a 9% increase. Argentina’s beef sector saw significant growth; export revenue rose 44.7% in the first half of 2026 to approximately US$2.2 billion. While volume increased by 10%, the revenue jump was largely driven by a 31.5% rise in average export prices. China remains the top buyer, accounting for 53% of volume, while the United States has emerged as the second-largest market, taking 19.5% of volume through a shift toward high-quality cuts. By mid-August, new data indicated that livestock company debt in Argentina has reached a 20-year high of US$1,562 million, fueled by a rise in dollar-denominated loans which now comprise 43% of debt. Despite this, calf values rose 68% over the past year. Additionally, Argentine sheep meat exports grew by 34% in volume during the first half of 2026, generating 46% more foreign exchange. Digital financing via AgTech platforms grew by 40% in the first half of the year. Recent developments in Argentina highlight a shifting fiscal landscape. Following the implementation of Decree 566/2026, which reduced taxes on over 1,400 tariff positions, the export duty burden has shifted primarily toward the agricultural sector.
