Argentina: Unregulated safety laws follow series of fatal sports accidents
A series of fatal accidents involving falling sports goals has highlighted a lack of safety oversight in Argentine sports clubs. In the past year, at least six serious incidents involving minors have been reported, including several fatalities in provinces such as Buenos Aires, Córdoba, San Juan, and Neuquén.
Despite the Buenos Aires Senate unanimously approving the ‘Joaquín Law’ three months ago to prevent such accidents and protect children in sports institutions, the regulation has not yet been implemented by the provincial government. The law aims to mandate safety measures to prevent goals from falling and to protect children from injuries caused by contact with walls or beams.
Recent victims include 12-year-old Bautista, who remains in serious condition after a goal fell on his head in Lanús, and several children who lost their lives in separate incidents across the country due to unsecured sports equipment.
