Argentine sports safety and regulation issues

Overview

A 12-year-old student is in serious condition following an incident at the Club Atlético Lanús sports complex in Argentina, where a football goal collapsed onto his head. The child suffered severe encephalocraneal trauma and has undergone three surgeries. Judicial authorities in Avellaneda-Lanús have opened an investigation into “lesiones culposas” (negligent injury) to determine if safety protocols and anchoring requirements were met.

This incident follows a series of fatal and serious accidents involving falling sports equipment across provinces including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, San Juan, and Neuquén. While the Buenos Aires Senate unanimously approved the ‘Joaquín Law’ three months ago to mandate safety measures and protect children from unsecured sports structures, the regulation has not yet been implemented by the provincial government.
