Argentina stages nationwide protests on one‑year anniversary of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s conviction

On June 10, marking the first anniversary of former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s judicial conviction, a coalition of political and social groups organized demonstrations across Argentina. In Buenos Aires, activities began at 16:00 at San José 1111, the residence where the former president serves a house‑arrest sentence, and parallel events were held in provinces such as Catamarca, Resistencia, San Juan, Trelew and dozens of municipalities in the Greater Buenos Aires area.

In the province of Buenos Aires, the anniversary also highlighted internal disputes within the Peronist movement. Facundo Tignanelli, leader of the Union por la Patria bloc in the provincial legislature, criticised municipal mayor Fernando Espinoza for withdrawing support, likening the silence on Kirchner’s case to “silencing a mouth when they cut a medication for an old person, or when they fire a worker, or when they turn their backs on a child needing hospital care.” Tignanelli linked the protests to broader opposition against President Javier Milei’s economic policies, accusing the government and traditional right‑wing forces of coordinating a plan that pressures the Argentine people.
