Argentina Kirchner legal battles, protests, pension cuts
Entities: Máximo Kirchner · Kristalina Georgieva · Cristina Fernández de Kirchner · La Cámpora · Javier Milei
Overview
Coordinated Peronist rallies for former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner began in early June 2024, including a national “Cristina libre” demonstration and a balcony address on the one‑year anniversary of her detention. The movement grew in June 2026 with large “banderazo” gatherings in Buenos Aires and Rosario, led by Máximo Kirchner, who called for her release, urged her to run for office and attacked rival Peronists. Internal disputes emerged when Máximo criticised Governor Axel Kicillof for not visiting his mother. Legal setbacks followed. On 29 June 2026 the Procurador General asked the Supreme Court to revoke Kirchner’s widow’s pension, while the Federal Court of Cassation reaffirmed her strict house‑arrest conditions, including an electronic anklet and limited visitation. Peronist militants commemorated the 52nd anniversary of Juan Domingo Perón’s death on 1 July, reinforcing the narrative that Peronism is the sole path to national recovery ahead of the 2027 elections. On 8 July 2026 a court injunction ordered ANSES to resume the widow’s pension—about 15.7 million pesos a month—from August. Five days later the government announced two deductions from the pension: the removal of the southern‑zone allowance and a monthly cut of roughly 3.1 million pesos until a total of 660 million pesos is recovered, citing improperly received funds. On 17 July 2026 the Federal Court of Cassation rejected an extraordinary appeal seeking to ease the house‑arrest terms, leaving the ankle bracelet, visitation limits and residence restrictions in place. Kirchner’s lawyers indicated they may still file a complaint with the Supreme Court. By late July, La Cámpora, led by Máximo Kirchner, framed the case as part of an “anti‑Argentine campaign” by the Milei government and moved to internationalise the dispute.
