Argentina steps up against animal abuse with dog seizure and proposed abuser registry

A court in Buenos Aires province ordered the seizure of two greyhounds used for illegal hunting at a rural property in San Antonio de Areco, marking the first time such animals have been confiscated in the region. The dogs, found in poor physical condition, were placed under the custody of the animal‑rights group Corazones Vagabundos while the case proceeds. The decision, driven by prosecutor Lisandro Masson, has drawn praise from animal‑protection advocates and criticism from hunting supporters.

In Corrientes, city officials introduced a draft law to create a Registry of Animal Abusers. The registry would list individuals sanctioned by municipal authorities or convicted under national animal‑cruelty legislation and would bar them from keeping any animal—pets, livestock or wildlife—for at least five years. The proposal, presented by councilwoman Sandra Olivera, aims to strengthen rescue and adoption processes and is awaiting approval by the health and legislation commissions.
