Argentina delegates national route management to San Juan

Argentina's national government is delegating the management of strategic road corridors to provinces. Under a new 20-year agreement, San Juan will assume responsibility for the financing, maintenance, and construction of five national routes, including the iconic Ruta 40, routes 20, 153, 150, and 149. The agreement was signed by Chief of Staff Diego Santilli, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, and San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego.

Simultaneously, Gabriel Katopodis, the Minister of Infrastructure for Buenos Aires Province, has leveled heavy accusations against President Javier Milei and Minister Luis Caputo regarding the use of fuel tax revenues. Katopodis claims that since the start of the current administration, over 1 trillion pesos collected through the Integrated Road System (SisVial) has remained unspent on roadworks. He alleges that while funds were collected, the national road network has suffered from abandonment and neglect, posing risks to public safety.

In Mendoza, former governor Julio Cobos has requested an investigation into whether provincial funds were used to cover maintenance obligations that should have been the responsibility of the national government. He seeks to determine if the state is being forced to substitute for national duties regarding routes 7, 40, and 143.
