Argentina infrastructure and road management developments

Argentina is implementing various infrastructure developments across its provinces, particularly in the transport and energy sectors. In San Juan, projects include the expansion of Route 40 North and the construction of a 93 km high-voltage power line to support mining operations in the Vicuña district. Other regional developments involve road concessions in Mendoza and Entre Ríos, alongside energy infrastructure upgrades in Santa Fe.

Following these developments, the national government transferred the management and maintenance of five national routes—including National Route 40, 20, 153, 150, and 149—to the province of San Juan for 20 years. Under this agreement, signed by Chief of Staff Diego Santilli, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, and Governor Marcelo Orrego, San Juan will assume responsibility for financing and conservation.

This shift occurs amid intense political criticism regarding the administration’s management of road infrastructure funds. Gabriel Katopodis, the Minister of Infrastructure for Buenos Aires Province, has accused President Javier Milei and Minister Caputo of failing to utilize fuel tax revenues, alleging that over 1 trillion pesos collected through the Integrated Road System (SisVial) has remained unspent, leading to the neglect of the national road network. Additionally, in Mendoza, former governor Julio Cobos has requested an investigation into whether provincial funds were improperly used to cover maintenance obligations for routes 7, 40, and 143 that should have been the responsibility of the national government.
