Argentina Vice President Victoria Villarruel clashes with Senate over judicial appointments

Senator Francisco Paoltroni of Formosa sharply criticized Vice President Victoria Villarruel, accusing her of protecting Governor Gildo Insfrán and saying “las caretas se van cayendo.” Paoltroni reaffirmed his support for President Javier Milei’s economic programme while condemning what he called “political impropriety” in the executive’s attempt to block a Senate‑approved judicial dossier.

The Senate later approved the nomination of judge María Victoria Michelli despite executive opposition, prompting Villarruel to warn on X that “campaigns against those who think differently” were emerging. She defended a free and responsible press, citing the need for journalists who “investigate, ask questions and make people uncomfortable when necessary.” Villarruel reiterated that democratic institutions must remain pluralistic and open to both journalism and citizens, even amid growing political tension.
