Argentina's Aprender 2025 tests show language gains, math challenges

The 2025 Aprender national assessment reported notable improvements in language skills across Argentina, especially among vulnerable groups, while mathematics performance remained below expectations. The Ministry of Human Capital highlighted that 55 % of sixth‑grade students achieved satisfactory levels in mathematics, compared with a higher share in language.

Provincial results varied: Santa Cruz recorded its best language performance in a decade, with 79.2 % of students meeting or exceeding expectations, and a modest rise in mathematics. Chubut ranked among the four best provinces, improving 18 points in language and four points in mathematics, and achieving a 98.3 % school participation rate. Entre Ríos surpassed the national average in both subjects—77.3 % in language and 53.5 % in mathematics—while reducing students below basic level to 4.4 % and 20.3 % respectively. Córdoba placed second nationally, posting 82.4 % in language and 64.3 % in mathematics, prompting Governor Martín Llaryora to declare that “Córdoba consolidates its educational leadership.” Buenos Aires reported a 10.2‑point increase in language and a 4.7‑point rise in mathematics, with the most significant gains among public and lower‑socio‑economic schools.

Provincial officials credited recent literacy plans and targeted teacher training for the gains. Minister Sandra Petovello said, “el Compromiso Federal por la Alfabetización permitió concentrar esfuerzos…”, while Santa Cruz’s education council noted that “los resultados muestran que el camino elegido empieza a dar frutos.” The assessment aims to guide future policy, with a new federal commitment for mathematics slated for 2026.
