Argentina's Arpel Conference Highlights Latin America's Rise as Energy Powerhouse

The first day of the Arpel 2026 conference in Buenos Angeles brought together leading energy executives and analysts who said Latin America is entering a historic window to become a central global energy supplier. Daniel Yergin, vice‑president of S&P Global, warned of growing geopolitical tensions and a slower‑than‑expected energy transition, while noting that oil production is shifting toward the region, with Brazil, Guyana and Argentina gaining market share.

Conference speakers including Martín Terrado (GeoPark/Arpel), Bob Fryklund (S&P Global Energy) and Roberto Brandt highlighted the need for flexibility, investment in infrastructure and logistics, and emphasized the growing importance of shale‑light assets such as Argentina’s Vaca Muerta. YPF CEO Horacio Marín outlined plans to double the company’s size, boost output to 800,000 barrels per day and launch a LNG project targeting up to US$20 billion in exports, positioning Argentina among the world’s leading exporters.

Overall, participants described the current volatility as an opportunity for the region to attract substantial foreign capital, become a key source of hydrocarbons outside OPEC, and play a pivotal role in global energy security.
