Argentina's CGT backs nationwide university strike on August 12
A nationwide university strike is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 August 2026 across all public universities in Argentina. The protest is organized by the Unión de Docentes Argentinos (UDA) and backed by the Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT). Union leader Sergio Romero said the strike demands full implementation of the Ley de Financiamiento Universitario, salary updates for faculty and staff, and funding for student scholarships, warning “Sin universidad pública, no hay futuro.”
The Federal Administrative Court confirmed the validity of a precautionary measure that obliges the state to allocate the necessary budget for these updates, after the Supreme Court rejected an executive appeal that had sought to suspend the measure. The government, through the Ministry of Capital Humano, claims it has already complied with the agreed salary increases and labels the strike premature and unjustified.
