Argentina's Dog Ownership Rises on World Dog Day, Boosting Health

Around eight in ten Argentines now have a pet, with roughly 16 million dogs among more than 32 million household animals. Most owners consider their dogs an additional family member, a sentiment reinforced by scientific studies that link dog companionship to reduced cortisol levels, lower stress, less loneliness and overall better emotional wellbeing.

The global celebration of World Dog Day on 21 July (and Argentina’s own National Dog Day on 2 June) has drawn attention to these benefits. A Mars‑commissioned survey of over 20,000 pet owners across 20 countries found that half of dog owners cite unconditional love as a key advantage, while nearly half say a dog's presence strengthens family feelings. In Argentina, 70% of respondents view their dog as a family member.

Veterinarians warn that despite the positive bond, routine veterinary care has slipped, with vaccinations and check‑ups down about 20%, raising disease risks. Experts stress annual clinical exams, up‑to‑date vaccinations, year‑round parasite control, daily dental care and weight management to sustain canine longevity and the health benefits for owners.
