Argentina's Energy Sector Faces Skill Shortage as Demand for 30,000‑43,000 Workers Grows

An Adecco Argentina report projects that the Argentine energy sector will need between 30,000 and 43,000 additional direct workers by 2030, driven by the expansion of Vaca Muerta, mining and related infrastructure projects. Companies are prioritising operatives, welders, drivers, machinists and engineers with real‑world experience and technical specialization, while the country produces only about 6,000 engineers annually against a demand of roughly 15,000.

The same labour market analysis notes a broader downturn under President Javier Milei’s administration: from November 2023 to March 2026, 339,841 job positions were lost, with 26,448 employers disappearing. The most affected sectors include wholesale and retail trade, vehicle repair, transport and storage, and construction, which saw a 17 % drop in employment. Large firms (over 500 employees) accounted for two‑thirds of the job losses, while domestic work also suffered a notable decline. These trends highlight a dual challenge for Argentina—rapid sectoral growth requiring specialised talent and a wider contraction of employment across many industries.
