Argentina's Glacier Law reform faces mass street protest

A spontaneous public assembly gathered outside the Argentine Congress on a rainy Wednesday, setting up chairs and blocking traffic at the intersection of Riobamba and Bartolomé Mitre. Demonstrators displayed signs such as “The Glacier Law must not be touched” and “Water is worth more than gold,” demanding a popular consultation on the Senate‑approved modification of the Glacier Law. The protest, organized by opposition lawmakers and civic groups, was prompted by limited speaking time in the official hearing, which allowed only 360 interventions out of more than 100,000 registered participants. Organizers announced a follow‑up meeting at the mast of Parque Centenario on Saturday, aiming to continue pressure on the reform. Police barriers limited access to the congressional building, while supporters provided megaphones, chairs and logistical aid to sustain the gathering.
