Argentina's Gualeguay and Riachuelo municipalities ready for El Niño floods

In Gualeguay, Mayor Dora Bogdan met with a provincial hydraulic technician and volunteer firefighters to coordinate emergency plans for the approaching El Niño event. The municipal administration is monitoring river basins, updating risk maps and strengthening response capacity. The city also organized a humanitarian drive to collect medicines and basic supplies for Venezuelan earthquake victims, overseen by municipal production director Carmen Moreno Betancourt.

In the neighboring Buenos Aires Province town of Riachuelo, Mayor Nicolás Tejo outlined extensive preventive works aimed at reducing flood risk. The municipality has prioritized cleaning, dredging and maintenance of streams and drainage systems, allocating 100 % of its infrastructure budget to these tasks. Tejo noted that past works on the Riachuelo stream have improved water flow and that the town relies on its volunteer fire brigade, local hospital and health centers, as well as police and community volunteers for emergency response. Both localities are preparing for the “Super Niño” forecasts that could bring heavy rains and flooding.
